Dutertes top Pulse Asia presidential, VP survey

President Rodrigo Duterte and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio led the latest Pulse Asia poll on Filipinos’ bets for president and vice president in the upcoming 2022 national elections.

The younger Duterte who earlier expressed openness in joining the presidential race scored 28% as the survey respondents’ first choice, followed by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno with 14%, and Bongbong Marcos with 13%.

Senator Grace Poe was the choice of 10% of the respondents, followed by Senator Manny Pacquiao with 8%, Vice President Leni Robredo with 6%, Senator Ping Lacson with 4%, and Senator Bong Go with 3%.

Duterte-Carpio also scored 16%, still the highest, in terms of Filipinos second presidential preference in the upcoming elections. She was followed by Poe, Marcos, Pacquiao, and Go.

The first choice vice presidential poll was topped by President Duterte with 18%, followed by Moreno with 14%, Senate President Vicente Sotto III and Marcos with 10% each, and Pacquiao with 9%.

In terms of second preference for vice president, Pacquiao and Marcos shared the highest spot with 13%, followed by Moreno and Sotto with 11%, and Go with 9%.

The most preferred senatorial bets also include Pacquiao, Moreno, Duterte-Carpio, Raffy Tulfo, Alan Cayetano, Francis Escudero, Marcos, Loren Legarda, Lacson, Willie Revillame, Jinggoy Estrada, Juan Miguel Zubiri, and Jejomar Binay.

PRRD says no

President Duterte said in his July 12 public address that he is “against really the candidacy” of his daughter to spare her from the current politics scene.

“Gusto ko itabi ko na lang muna ang anak ko. Maybe some other time. Not at this time when the Philippine politics is crowded with people in the likes of [Sonny] Trillanes tapos si [Leila] de Lima,” he said.

He also said his decision to run for the vice presidency is not yet final, and that he will enter the race “if it’s good for the country.”

Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), Inday Sara’s current party, said it understands the statement of the current president which it described as paternal advice.

“Napakadami ring mga intriga sa pulitika, nadaanan lahat ‘yan ni Pres. Digong in the last five years,” HNP Secretary-General Anthony del Rosario said.

“Of course, with that experience… Siguro si Presidente ay ayaw din niyang dumaan ‘yung anak niya sa ganoong klaseng pamumuhay,” he added.  – Report from Daniel Manalastas/AG-rir
