Elderly couple dead in QC fire

A married couple, both senior citizens, died Thursday after their 2-storey home was razed in a fire at Brgy. Roxas District, Quezon City.

They were identified as Mariano Mejia, 79, and Benita Mejia, 78.

According to the Quezon City Fire District, Benita had evacuated the burning house but decided to go back and attempt to bring out her bedridden husband. The wooden floor of the second storey of their house collapsed and left the couple trapped.

Firefighters found their remains in their living room.

Initial investigation revealed that the fire started in the ground floor living room, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The first alarm was raised around 1:21 a.m. and was put out around 2:00 a.m, with some 25 firetrucks and 4 ambulances responding to the residential fire.

The estimated cost of damage was around ₱3 million.
