Enrollment up 4% for SY2021-2022: DepEd

The Department of Education (DepEd) recorded 27,232,095 enrollees for school year 2021-2022, up by almost four percent from last year’s 26.2 million.

“This enrollment is 1,005,073 or 3.83 percent higher than the 26,227,022 enrollment last school year. By sector, public schools enrollment increased by 1,187,632 or by 5.23 percent from last year’s enrollment,” the DepEd said Thursday, citing figures from the Learner Information System (LIS) as of November 15.

The enrollment data is not yet final as there are still 520 schools – 47 public, 437 private, 25 state universities and colleges or local universities and colleges and 11 Philippine Schools Overseas – that have yet to update their enrollment profile in the LIS.

The DepEd said the LIS would be open to allow these schools to update their enrollment profile up to the end of this month.

Division superintendents have been notified of the location of the non-participating schools to find out the reasons why these schools have not updated their enrollment profile and to provide assistance in completing the LIS.

As for the data on transferees, the DepEd noted a reversal on the trend where “a net migration of public school learners to private schools” has been observed.

“More than 612,140 learners transferred from public to private schools, while more than 305,513 learners transferred from private to public schools, for a net transfer from public to private schools of 306,627,” the DepEd said.

Meanwhile, the Alternative Learning System (ALS) enrollment is at 239,616 – 359,749 or 60 percent less than last year’s 599,365.

“The increase in the number of enrollees this year confirms that our learners last year continued their participation in formal school this year and that a considerable number of those who skipped last school year have returned to school,” the statement read.

“We expect to move close to the enrollment quick count of 28 million with the extension of enrollment updating to end-November. We will release a more granular enrollment analysis after November 30,” it added. (PNA)-rir
