ERC prohibits electricity disconnection until Dec 2020 for some consumers

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) ordered distribution utilities to extend the “no disconnection” policy until the end of 2020 for customers who consume 200kWh and below by virtue of the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act.

The law aims to help citizens gravely affected by the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to recover. But all consumers are given a 30-day grace period to pay their balance for the months under ECQ without interest and penalty. Government agencies are not allowed to avail of the grace period and installment payment.
The ERC reminds consumers not to abuse the extension especially if they could afford to pay. The group, Laban Konsyumer, has also released a statement regarding the next action after December if bills are not yet paid by then.

It stated that “ERC should get data from the private stakeholders on the aging of their bills from March 11 to October 2020. What number of unpaid monthly bills deserve to be cut off and what can be given extension? There should be at least 3 notices sent before the cut off is implemented.” Report from Naomi Tiburcio
