Establishment of crematorium, columbarium pushed in Zambo

ZAMBOANGA CITY — City Councilor Jimmy Villaflores is pushing for the establishment of a government-owned crematorium and columbarium in this city.

Villaflores, a mediaman turned politician, said the facility would cater to families whose departed loved ones wish to be cremated.

Villaflores noted that at present the families used to transport the remains of their departed loved ones to Manila to be cremated.

He said the facility could also cater to residents of the nearby areas aside from this city.

He said the facility could be established at the city government-owned cemetery in Barangay Mampang.

He said the city government has sufficient funds to put up the facility. The crematory machine roughly costs PHP8 million.

Villaflores, in pushing for his plan, has sponsored a proposed ordinance seeking for the establishment of a crematorium and columbarium and appropriating funds thereof.

The measure hurdled on first reading on Tuesday, March 6, during the regular session of the City Council.

The crematorium and columbarium here, once established, will be the first in the region as well as in Mindanao. (PNA)
