By Joyce Ann L. Rocamora (PNA)

MANILA — The European Union (EU) on Friday denounced the killing of Benjamin Ramos Jr., the secretary general of the Negros Occidental chapter of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers.

“The European Union strongly condemns the killing by unidentified men on 6 November 2018 of Attorney Benjamin Tarug Ramos,” the EU Delegation in Manila said in a statement.

“The European Union expresses its sincere condolences to the families of all the victims and looks to the ongoing investigations, as announced by the Government, to swiftly bring those responsible to justice,” it added.

Earlier, the Department of Justice ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to probe whether the Negrense lawyer’s murder is linked to the Sagay farmers’ massacre.

Ramos, the lawyer for the National Federation of Sugar Workers in Negros Occidental, has provided legal aid to farmers, following the killing of nine sugarcane farmers in Sagay on October 20.

He was shot dead in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental around 10:30 p.m. by motorcycle-riding men along Rojas St., Barangay 5, about 3 kms. away from a police station.
