Social technology giant Facebook Inc. on Thursday (Oct. 28) announced its name change to Meta as the company introduced the “next evolution of social connection” called the metaverse.

In a speech, Facebook Chairperson and CEO Mark Zuckerberg presented the metaverse as an immersive space for people to connect through 3D spaces that can be acquired through the use of virtual reality or augmented reality devices as well as smart glasses.

He explained that social connection can be made through avatars and home spaces to “feel the presence” of each other, which is the “defining quality of the metaverse.”

He claimed that the metaverse is the successor of the mobile internet and that it will tap beyond the current social technology through its immersive interactions.

Zuckerberg said the metaverse will be “built by creators and developers making new experiences and digital items that are interoperable and unlock a massively larger creative economy that the one constrained by today’s platforms and their policies.”

As the Facebook CEO introduced the metaverse, he claimed that the company is focusing on the future as they bring the metaverse to life.

“I believe that we’re put on this earth to create, I believe that technology can make our lives better, and I believe that the future won’t be built on its own. It will be built by those who want to stand up and say, ‘This is the future that we want and I’m going to keep pushing and give everything I’ve got to make this happen.’”

The company assured that its mission remains to “bring people together” following the name change.

“Our apps and their brands aren’t changing either. But all of our products, including our apps, now share a new vision to help bring the metaverse to life,” Zuckerberg said. – jlo
