Filipino debaters win int’l debate tilt

By Gabriela Baron

A team from the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) won in the latest World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) held in Madrid, Spain on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

The tandem of David Africa and Toby Leung bested teams from Princeton University in the United States, Sofia University in Bulgaria, and Tel Aviv University in Israel.

The teams debated on whether or not it was preferable to have a “world where all individuals have a strong belief in Ubuntu.”

“Ubuntu” or “I am because we are” is a philosophical belief that asserts that people’s identities should be shaped by, and their obligations should primarily be owed to, their communities.

Organized in 1981 and considered as the world’s largest debating tournament, WUDC is held annually in English with teams representing universities from across the world. -ag
