Fishing ban lifted in 7 Oriental Mindoro towns

By Gabriela Baron

Oriental Mindoro Governor Humerlito Dolor has lifted the fishing ban in seven Oriental Mindoro towns over two months after motor tanker (MT) Princess Empress sank and leaked oil into the sea.

Fisherfolk from the towns of Bongabog, Roxas, Mansalay, Bulalacao, Baco, San Teodoro, and Puerto Galera can now resume their fishing activities.

A fishing ban, however, stays for the towns of Calapan, Naujan, Pola, Pinamalayan, Gloria, and Bansud.

“[H]inihikayat namin kayong mangisda sa pinakamalapit na bayan na maaaring pangisdaan,” Dolor said.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources earlier recommended alternative fishing grounds to aid affected fisherfolk.
