Flooded North Cotabato town under state of calamity

COTABATO CITY – A North Cotabato town has been placed under a state of calamity due to floods that submerged eight of its 24 villages following torrential rains the past three days, a town official said Friday.

Kabacan Vice Mayor Myra Dulay Bade said the Sangguniang Bayan passed a resolution Thursday declaring a state of calamity upon recommendation of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (MDRRMC) Officer.

David Don Saure, head of MDRRMC, said eight villages have been under water for three days after the Kabacan River overflowed due to heavy downpour caused by a Low-Pressure Area affecting Mindanao.

Saure, in an interview over a local radio station, said that even creeks and irrigation canals overflowed due to overnight downpour on Wednesday night that also destroyed agricultural crops and drowned farm animals in floodwaters.

“The floods also affected 2,000 families,” Saure said, adding that the submerged villages included Katidtuan, Upper Paatan, Malanduage, Aringay, Kayaga, Lumayong, Osias, and Lower Paatan.

Despite the floods, Saure said there were no reported casualties in the disaster. He added that the MDRRMC is also continuously monitoring the water level of Kabacan River, whose water source emanates from the hinterlands of Bukidnon province. (PNA)
