Floods hit Metro Manila amid monsoon rains

MANILA — Several areas in Metro Manila were flooded Tuesday morning due to heavy rains caused by the enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat”.

In an advisory, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said flooding was reported in the following areas as of 9:10 a.m.:

  • Brgy Tatalon Roxas District both northbound and southbound- waist deep (not passable to all types of vehicles)
  • R.Papa Manila northbound- Half Tire (not passable to light vehicles)
  • E.Rod Delos Santos Medical City northbound and southbound – knee deep (not passable to all types of vehicles)
  • Doña Carmen westbound- gutter deep (passable to all types of vehicles)
  • Cubao Tunnel Aurora NB – gutter deep (passable to all types of vehicles).

The Inter-Agency Council on Traffic (I-ACT) will provide transportation to ferry stranded commuters in various parts of Metro Manila.

Two Philippine Coast Guard trucks will be dispatched along the LRT station of R. Papa to Pedro Gil through Taft Avenue, two military trucks from the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region in Mandaluyong Circle going to EDSA and four military trucks from Batasan to Fairview.

“We are currently monitoring the situation with the MMDA,” I-ACT spokesperson Aileen Lizada told reporters via Viber.

As of 9:16 a.m., Marikina City has raised first alarm after the Marikina River has reached 15.2 meters. Critical level is declared when the water level reaches 18 meters. Residents in the area near the river were advised to be alert for possible flooding.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has raised an Orange Rainfall Warning over Metro Manila, Bulacan, Bataan and Batangas due to moderate to heavy rains and possible flooding within the next two hours. (Aerol John Pateña/PNA)
