LAOAG CITY — Some residents in Ilocos Norte feasted on a sea of fog on Tuesday morning as they posted road photos and local sceneries of the extraordinary sight in the province.

Feeling the cold month of February in this part of Luzon, Sharon Aliga from Baay village, Batac City said at about 7:30 a.m., motorists passing through the national highway could hardly drive due to poor visibility.

Teachers and students before going to school also made time to pose for ‘selfie’ as residential houses and school buildings were engulfed in cold mist.

“It’s already 6:45 a.m. yet the green vast of our surroundings is still covered with cold fog. There’s no need going to Pine City,” Nataliza Laddaran of Batac City jokingly said in her Facebook account.

For a visiting local tourist like Redge Gesther Acapuyan from Tuguegarao City, he described the weather as “Baguio feels” while waking up to a cold misty morning in Laoag.

Based on historical climate data, February is among the coldest month in the country, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

“It is during this time when the northeast monsoon, locally known as Amihan is nearing its peak. It is associated with the cool, dry air blowing from the polar region of Siberia, Mongolia, and the northern region reaches Chinese mainland where wintry blast of polar air is consequentially being pushed clockwise and downward by a strong anti-cyclone (high pressure) system,” according to the weather bureau.

Meanwhile, light to strong winds coming from the northeast will prevail over Northern Luzon and the coastal waters will be slight to rough.
