Follow inspection procedures, MIAA urges passengers

MANILA — The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) reiterated its call on the public to follow inspection procedures at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

“This (call) doesn’t mean there are a lot of unruly passengers. This is just a gentle reminder,” MIAA Public Affairs officer-in-charge Consuelo Bungag told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Tuesday.

Bungag added that NAIA is no longer on full alert status, but is currently under Security Alert Level 2.

According to MIAA, NAIA passengers undergo seven security checks before they could board their flights. These include body checks and screening procedures for their baggage.

MIAA also noted that additional screening will be done if suspicious items are found in their baggage.

“Security checks should not be perceived as an inconvenience when you have thousands of lives to protect,” MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal said in a separate statement.

Monreal has been advising passengers to ensure that their baggages are free from prohibited items before checking them in, and to pack and check their own bags.

Earlier this year, Monreal has also advised passengers to check the guidelines issued by both the airlines and the agency on prohibited items to avoid hassle during travel.

Based on MIAA’s records, NAIA screeners were able to intercept 2,291 prohibited items last year.
