MANILA — At least 1,000 members of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) are expected to attend its annual scientific conference and general membership assembly on Monday at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

In an interview with the Philippine News Agency, Ruby Raterta, chief science research specialist, said this year’s theme, “Humanizing the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” seeks to “create awareness among all our researchers, scientists and engineers on the insights, prospects and opportunities and challenges in the fourth industrial revolution.”

She added that by having this topic at the conference, the NRCP will support the researchers and implement researches applicable in preparation for the fourth industrial revolution.

“(We will help them) on how they will adapt towards the new technologies. Also, policy directions may be generated towards how the fourth industrial revolution can work for humanity’s welfare while emerging innovations unfold,” Raterta said.

Raterta said the public can benefit from the fourth industrial revolution through the use of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, internet of things (IoT), nanotechnology, among others.

“These (new technologies) will definitely offer vast opportunities for the public, help them ease their work, provide them with a more efficient communication and businesses),” Raterta added.

She explained that using robots “as co-workers”, for instance, could add for a more efficient business.

“It is important that all will be aware of these things so everyone will know how to adapt for the revolution,” she said.

Meanwhile, Raterta said non-NRCP members may also join the assembly and pay a PHP900 registration fee on site.

A Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-attached agency, the NRCP has 4,327 members composed of scientists and researchers across the country.
