MANILA — As the Philippine economy starts to climb and more infrastructure are on the way, the French embassy in the country has initiated a series of events toward sustainable urban development through its Manila 2050 event.

With the help of the Micronesian embassy, French Ambassador to the Philippines Nicolas Galey said this initiative was selected as part of the call for projects of Institut Francais “Fonds d’ AIembert” during the launch of European Union’s annual culture season, Viva Europa.

“It supports international public discourses on various themes within which French research has strong international expertise. In 2019, the selected theme is ‘Cities of the Future'”, Galey said.

Manila 2050 intends to bring together French and Filipino experiences and expertise in sustainable and livable urban development through a transdisciplinary approach combining conferences, debates, exhibitions, workshops, master classes, among others.

On April 24, a forum on waste and water management in Metro Manila will take place at the Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology of the University of the Philippines.

On this occasion, representatives from Syctom, the metropolitan agency for household waste in Paris, will be present to share their experiences on waste management in the French capital.

The forum will be followed by an event on urban development and architecture at the Ateneo de Manila University at the end of June as well as documentary film screenings and debates organized toward the latter half of 2019.

A comic illustration contest will also be organized on the occasion of the visit to the Philippines of the acclaimed French writer and comic artist, Benoit Peeters.
