Garbage piles collected in Manila Bay after heavy rains

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted clean-up operations on Thursday (July 22) after piles of garbage washed ashore in Manila Bay’s dolomite beach following torrential rains in the past days.

DENR Undersecretary Jonas Leones said the sources of the collected garbage are Cavite, Bulacan, Bataan, Pasig River, Tullahan River, and Paraῆaque.

“We will be expecting more garbage until we have addressed ‘yung mga sources na pumupunta sa Manila Bay,” he said.

The DENR said they will fix the changes in the artificial white sand, but will no longer load additional crushed dolomites. Leones said geo-intervention measures are in place to ensure that the sand can “withstand strong waves and strong current of water.”

The agency also reiterated its stand that the beach nourishment project that includes the placement of artificial white sand has greatly contributed to Manila Bay’s rehabilitation. – Report from Cleizl Pardilla/AG-rir
