Gen. Trias City bans sale, use of firecrackers

by Dennis Abrina/PNA

GENERAL TRIAS CITY, Cavite — Mayor Antonio Ferrer and the local police on Friday warned that City Ordinance No. 17-06 that bans the sale and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices, would be strictly enforced in the city.

Ferrer and Supt. Paul Bometivo, General Trias Police chief, said the firecracker ban is to ensure the safety of the residents, especially during the New Year revelry.

The ordinance regulates the use of firecrackers to minimize, if not eradicate, accidents that might result in loss of lives and property due to the irresponsible and indiscriminate use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices. It was authored by Councilor Gary Grepo, who chairs the committee on peace, public safety and order, and was approved last year.

Under the ordinance, the local government unit should designate a common area for the firecrackers and fireworks during the New Year revelry, under the supervision of the local police.

The ordinance prohibits the sale, distribution and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices that could endanger life and limb, among them the atomic big triangulo, super lolo, Goodbye Earth, Judah’s Belt, whistle Bomb, and Watusi.

Firecracker vendors, however, are allowed to display their merchandise in zones designated for the selling of firecrackers and pyrotechnics.

The respective village chiefs of 33 barangays will designate areas for the allowed firecrackers and pyrotechnics, which include sparklers, luces, fountain, mabuhay, roman candle, trompillo, airwolf, whistle device, butterfly, and all kinds of “pailaw” devices.
