Globe, Smart to build additional cell sites in Pangasinan town

BAYAMBANG, Pangasinan — Globe Telecom and Smart Communications will soon be constructing additional cell sites in this town to boost the reception or signal here of the two telecommunication companies.

Councilman Benjamin De Vera, in an interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Wednesday, disclosed the two network companies have positively responded to the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) request for additional cell sites through a resolution unanimously approved by its members last March.

Network users have experienced various network problems such as dropped calls, digital noise during a call, difficulty hearing the caller, highly variable signal, slow mobile internet and internet time-outs, the resolution sponsored by de Vera stated.

“Globe already has location for its cell towers; one in Barangay Maigpa and the other in Barangay Hermosa, which are both near the Poblacion area,” de Vera said.

He disclosed that Globe has already complied with the documentary requirements, such as the approval from the barangays in the form of a local resolution, while Smart will also work on complying with the said requirements as soon as it has identified the location for its cell tower.

“The resolution authorizing the construction of the towers is on its third and final reading in the SB, and then they (Globe and Smart) will need to secure permit to construct from the municipality before they can proceed,” de Vera said.

Aside from improved network signal, the construction of the towers will also benefit the owners of unused land properties in far-flung barangays which the two companies will rent out for their cell sites, said De Vera.

“There are still some negotiations going on between the municipality and the two companies, which include a possible free Wi-Fi connection in some areas of the town, although this is not yet approved,” he said.

De Vera said Globe and Smart presently have a maximum of two existing cell sites each in the town. (Hilda Austria/PNA)
