Gov’t builds 11-ha. transitional shelter for Marawi IDPs

ILIGAN CITY, Aug. 4 — Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) Gov. Mujiv Hataman on Friday announced that the resettlement area in the village of Sagonsongan in nearby Marawi City will be completed in a month’s time.

Hataman,  along with Cabinet Sec. Leoncio Evasco Jr., Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) Chair Eduardo del Rosario, on Thursday visited the 11-hectare transitional shelters that will serve as temporary resettlement of residents displaced by conflict in Marawi City.

Hataman said the resettlement site can accommodate at least 1,200 families. “The main purpose of building transition shelters is to decongest the evacuation centers and to provide them with more conducive areas,” he said.

It will have a madrasah, kitchen area, wash room, market, mosque, water supply, toilets, and a multi-purpose hall.

The construction of the temporary shelters is part of the Task Force Bangon Marawi’s recovery, reconstruction, and rehabilitation of Marawi City.

President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the creation of an inter-agency task force to develop and implement a comprehensive rehabilitation and recovery program for Marawi City based on a post-conflict assessment.

Meanwhile, the Armm government continues to augment the delivery of relief assistance to the internally displaced persons (IDP) housed in evacuation centers in the neighboring towns of Lanao del Sur province.

Hataman led the turnover of 19,611 food packs each containing 25 kilos of rice and other food items to seven local government units (LGUs) hosting the IDP-families.

The seven LGUs included Bacolod Kalawi, Kapai, Madamba, Lumbayanague, Bayang, and the provincial government of Lanao del Sur.

The relief packs will be given to recipient-families with verified Disaster Assistance Family Access Card (DAFAC) utilized by the Department of Social Welfare and Development in (DSWD-Armm) in order to ensure equal and timely relief distribution.

A total of 30,325 food packs containing 25 kilos of rice and other food items have been distributed to the IDPs, and 56,396 food packs containing six kilos of rice and other food items have been distributed to IDPs.

As of July 27, the number of evacuees from Marawi City is recorded at 268,270 individuals comprising of 53,654 families. (DWTW/PNA)
