Honest airport cop turns in bag containing P1.5-M

MANILA — The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) will recognize an honest airport personnel for returning a bag containing PHP1.5 million left by a passenger, its spokesperson, Eric Apolonio, told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Wednesday.

According to the agency, PO3 Mark Briones, a K9 handler of the PNP-Aviation Security Unit, found a bag at the Puerto Princesa International Airport’s arrival area on Tuesday. Inside the bag, it added, was a brown envelope with PHP1.5 million cash.

An ID was also found inside the bag, enabling authorities to track the owner, Danilo Dequito, who traveled from Manila to Puerto Princesa.

Authorities first verified Dequito’s identity before returning the bag to him.

“CAAP management regularly recognizes the good deeds of its employees,” Apolonio said.

He added that this is not the first time a CAAP personnel was able to find and return a passenger’s valuables.

He shared that in 2014, a female janitor assigned at the Iloilo International Airport surrendered a handbag containing valuables, which she found under a chair in the departure area.

The handbag contained foreign currencies and a laptop, which could total to more than PHP1.5 million, he said. (Ma. Cristina Arayata/PNA)
