Hottest city turns cold due to tail-end of cold front

TUGUEGARAO CITY — Tuguegarao City touted as the Philippines hottest with 44 degrees Celsius temperature in the early 1950s is now experiencing cold weather brought about by the tail-end of the cold front affecting the country.

The cold weather was first felt here last Friday with a reading of 15 degrees Celsius.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in the Cagayan Valley on Monday said the cold weather condition will persist, at least in most parts of the region, until the early part of March 2018.

With more than 20 degrees Celsius difference from the normal temperature of 40-42 degrees mostly for the rest of the year, the residents here are enjoying the cold weather and are looking forward to lower water, power and other utility bills.

“At least, we don’t have to plug on our air-conditioning unit and our electric fans because it is cold,” said Rogelio Sending, Cagayan provincial information officer.

“We don’t even have to take a bath three or four times a day as we used to during the hot summer months,” he added.

“There’s not much clothing and beddings to wash because we don’t perspire. We are enjoying the cold weather,” said DZCV radio reporter Vanjie Malana.

Senior Inspector Dionesio Mercado of the police security group here said their power consumption this December will surely be reduced by almost 50 percent.

“With that savings generated, we can have more projects for our people,” Mercado said.

“At least, even with just a short period, we will be able to curb the trend of Global Warming because we are reducing our power consumption. We save on water as we do during the warm months,” said Engr. Lito Aquino, PAGASA officer-in-charge here. (PNA)
