MANILA — The House of Representatives has revived the congressional oversight committee with the election of Minority Leader Danilo Suarez as its new chairman.

During Wednesday’s plenary session, Majority Leader Rolando Andaya Jr. named Suarez as the chairman of the reconstituted panel tasked to assess the performance of various government agencies to ensure transparency and accountability.

The oversight committee was abolished during the administration of former president Benigno Aquino III.

Suarez stressed the importance of the panel in monitoring and evaluating the performance of government agencies and instrumentalities and ensuring that agencies are relevantly and fully utilizing their resources in accordance with their mandate.

“The principle of checks and balances is embedded in our Constitution to ensure that there will be no abuse of power and to correct mistakes or excesses committed by the other branches of the government,” he said.

“This shall coincide with the thrust of this administration against corruption, the improvement of the absorptive capacity of all government agencies, provision of basic services, and economic, social, and infrastructure development in the country,” Suarez added.
