HUDCC targets 600-700 temporary housing in Marawi by December

MANILA — The government targets to build 600 to 700 units of temporary shelter in Marawi City by third week of December for internally displaced people (IDP) affected by the clashes between government troops and Maute terrorists in the area.

Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) Chairman Eduardo del Rosario said in a radio interview Thursday that the local government had provided 14 hectares of land to build the temporary housing for IDPs.

“But we are targeting 1,175 housing [units],” del Rosario said, noting that the government eyes to deliver these units by January 2018.

He mentioned that each unit had a total area of 22 square meters, and had its own toilet.

The temporary shelter costs PHP160,000 per unit.

The HUDCC chief noted that even this would be a temporary shelter for the IDP, the facility would have power and water utilities.

Del Rosario said the government may not reach the 6,0000-unit requirement for the temporary shelter, but assured that it would also start building permanent housing units.

“We are now talking to the local government unit (LGU) to provide us [the land] for permanent shelter,” he further said.

“While we are working on the temporary shelter, we are also building the permanent [housing]. So once the permanent shelter is available, we can transfer the IDP,” del Rosario said in Filipino.

Del Rosario mentioned that the LGU is determining IDPs needing temporary shelter and those requiring permanent housing units.

He said the local government initially identified that around 6,300 IDPs would need temporary shelter and 2,700 for permanent housing. (Kris Crismundo/PNA)
