Ilocos Norte PNP wants more signage installed in accident-prone areas

LAOAG CITY — The Philippine National Police has urged the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to increase the installation of early warning signs in “accident-prone” areas of the province.

Supt. Dominic Guerrero, Laoag City police chief, on Saturday said there is a need to put up more signage to avoid fatal vehicular accidents in those areas again.

The police also reiterated to drivers and passengers to always buckle up for safety.

Guerrero’s statement came after the June 6 car accident near a curve of the newly-constructed Laoag bypass road connecting Laoag and Bacarra town, where Laoag Vice Mayor Michael Fariñas was killed.

Guerrero reported that at past 5 p.m. Wednesday, the vice mayor, who was driving a Mercedez Benz V8 Biturbo, allegedly overshoot as he approached a curve and lost control of the steering wheel.

With him was SPO2 Melchor Geronimo, who suffered spinal injury. The policeman is still under traumatic condition and is being treated at the Laoag City General Hospital.

Last week, another vehicular accident happened in the same area that killed two motorists riding in tandem. (Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
