Ilocos Norte town sets up rolling Kadiwa stores

LAOAG CITY — Residents in Vintar, Ilocos Norte eagerly welcomed on Monday a group of Capitol workers selling basic goods and food items to them at a lower price than those being sold in supermarkets.

Upon the invitation of the Vintar local government unit, the Kadiwa market or rolling store being supervised by the Small and Medium Enterprise Office (SMEO) under the provincial government of Ilocos Norte, visited Vintar to provide services to its people by giving them an alternative where to buy their basic needs at a cheaper price.

To avert the effect of inflation or the continuing increase of basic commodities and services, the Ilocos Norte government revived the Kadiwa project during the Marcos administration to help Ilocano families who are struggling to budget their day-to-day basic needs.

Inflation rate in Ilocos region province is pegged at 5.9 percent as of the latest survey.

A Kadiwa store sells rice, noodles, sugar, sardines, fish sauce and coffee, as well as in season fruits, vegetables and poultry, which are about 10 to 20 percent cheaper compared to the prevailing market price of these items.

“We continue to offer Kadiwa stores in the different towns and cities of the province so we can help households on a tight budget. The farm produce we sell to consumers comes directly from farmers and the grocery items are sourced out directly from the manufacturers,” said Edison Natividad, head of the SMEO, on Monday.
