Iloilo City celebrates Dinagyang Festival after 2 years

By Gabriela Baron

The Dinagyang Festival was celebrated again in Iloilo City Sunday, Jan. 22, after public celebrations were put on hold due to the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Held annually every fourth Sunday of January or right after the Sinulog in Cebu and the Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo, Aklan, the Dinagyang Festival is a religious and cultural event in Iloilo City.

In a statement, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said this year’s Dinagyang Festival was “beyond his expectations” and hailed the celebration as a “complete success.”

“I knew that everyone wanted a strong comeback after the pandemic but we did not expect this celebration,” Treñas said.

“I thank all our visitors for gracing our festivities. My gratitude goes to our sponsors. A job well done to all the tribes and performers. Finally, I congratulate and thank the Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc. for their selfless service to our city,” he added.
