Iloilo City invites sister cities for Charter Day anniversary

ILOILO CITY — The city government here has started sending invitation to cities it has sister agreements with to join its Charter Day anniversary on August 25.

Mayor Jose Espinosa on Thursday said the city government is trying to get in touch with local and international partners, as well as potential partners.

A lot of cities in China, including Guangzhou, are interested to become sisters with Iloilo City, he added in an interview.

“If the signing of the agreement with Guangzhou is realized, then we will also invite them to be with us,” he said.

“Almost all of the Chinese businessmen in Iloilo City trace their roots in Guangzhou that is why we are giving importance to this,” he said.

Iloilo City has a sister pact with 32 cities in the Philippines and abroad.

The sister agreement or cooperative agreements allows promotion and exchanges of programs in various fields.

Espinosa said that other local government units in the country are also getting in touch with their sister cities, such as in the case of San Juan, where he sent Councilor Liezl Joy Zulueta-Salazar to join a recent festival there.

This city also has sisterhood agreements with Bacolod, Makati, Quezon City and Koronadal.

It also has sister cities in China, United States, Guam and South Korea. (Perla Lena/PNA)
