MANILA — Following repeated affirmation of its commitment to support the development of the Philippines, the Japanese government has stepped up its promotion of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP).

The GGP was established in 1989 to assist non-government organizations and local public authorities in developing countries, such as the Philippines, in responding to various development needs in a prompt and complete manner.

The embassy said the GGP can support a project that amounts to a maximum of PHP4 million in the areas of education, health, social welfare, agriculture and water system enhancement.

Third Secretary Atsushi Kobayashi made a presentation promoting GGP at the General Assembly of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) held in Manila Hotel on March 20, 2018, which was attended by around 1,300 municipal mayors.

The participants visited the Embassy of Japan booth installed at the venue to make clarifications and ask questions about GGP.

The embassy said most of the mayors have expressed interest in GGP to improve the condition of their respective communities through the scheme.

Under the GGP, Japan had implemented more than 533 projects in the Philippines.

During the presentation, Kobayashi also emphasized Tokyo’s effort in helping the Bangsamoro, especially in the conflict-affected areas in Mindanao, with its Japan Bangsamoro Initiative for Reconstruction and Development (J-BIRD). J-BIRD has an estimated budget of over USD200 million.

With Tokyo and Manila entering a “Golden Age of Strategic Partnership,” the embassy said their government commits to provide more project for the Philippines from the macro-level up to the community level. (Joyce Ann L. Rocamora/PNA)
