Koronadal City to build large-scale composting facility

KORONADAL CITY — The city government has allotted about PHP20 million for the construction of a modern large-scale waste composting facility this year.

Augustus Bretana, head of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, said Thursday preparatory works are underway for the implementation of the project, which will be set up at the city’s sanitary landfill in Barangay Paraiso.

Bretana said the construction of the composting facility would help solve the area’s problems with the increasing volume of biodegradable wastes from local households and establishments.

Through composting, he said the local government will not only address the problem but earn additional income as well, by producing organic fertilizers.

As suggested by some residents, the city government can acquire shredders or chippers to enable the facility to produce potting soil.

The city government is currently developing a six-hectare sanitary landfill in Purok Pagunsan, Barangay Paraiso.

The project, which costs an estimated PHP20 million, could cater to some 15 tons of residual wastes daily, way higher than the four tons produced by the city.
The Level II facility will include a plastic thermal burning facility, which could process plastics into raw materials that may be used in the production of chairs, tables and similar products.
