In line with the People’s Television Network’s (PTV) mandate to deliver timely, correct, and relevant information for the masses, the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) conducted a seminar on the proper use of the Filipino language in media and communication at the PTV Training Center on Thursday.

Hosted by the PTV Media Academy and Training Center, the seminar was attended by the state network’s employees involved in production, including writers, reporters, anchors, producers, and editors from the News Department, Program and Production Services, Public Affairs Division, Sports Unit, Digital Media Interactive Services, and regional divisions.

Linguistics specialist Dr. Wilbert Lamarca recognized the important role of the media in promoting the country’s national language by observing its proper and correct usage in writing and reporting, especially as the KWF faces challenges in pushing for the standardization of the Filipino language.

Lamarca also stressed that highly technical and scientific words are better retained in their source language rather than translating them into Filipino—and media practitioners should instead focus on communicating these words’ intended meaning using Filipino to help the public understand the news.

“Kapag sinabing intelektuwalisasyon ng wika gamit ang wikang Filipino sa midya, sa batas, negosyo at iba pa, ‘yon nga lang, nakakalungkot isipin na minsan hindi ginagamit talaga sa usapin ng batas ang Filipino, sa negosyo, sa bangko…Ingles talaga,” Lamarca said.

However, Lamarca also called on the current generation to help preserve the Filipino language for future generations as it is also one of the assets of the Philippines’ rich culture and history. (with report from Allan Francisco/PTV News)
