La Consolacion turns back Letran in Fr. Martin’s Cup

MANILA — La Consolacion scored its first win in the Fr. Martin’s Cup Summer League in stunning fashion, downing Letran, 79-71, at the San Beda Gym on Tuesday.

The Blue Royals came back from a poor start, in which the Knights went on a 10-1 blast. Thereafter, La Consolacion eventually took control for the rest of the match, even taking a 16-point lead at several stretches of the third quarter.

La Consolacion, however, still needed to avert a late push by Letran as Gabriel Latoreno converted clutch baskets to stop Letran’s final gasp.

TJ Cariño came up with 18 points, while Ahron Estacio chipped in 14 for the Royals, who recovered from their defeat the last time out.

Kenny Rocacurba fired 26 markers for the Knights, who slipped to 1-3 in Group B in the seniors division.

In the juniors division, Letran made short work of Diliman Prep, 100-60.

Shawn Umali sparked the Squires’ breakaway by scoring eight straight points at the middle of the first quarter as they pounced on the debuting Baby Dragons’ struggles after a good start.

Umali and Andrei Romenez each put up 13 points for Letran, which remains unscathed in Group A at 3-0.

Aaron Acop scored 17 markers for Diliman Prep.
