CALAMBA CITY, Laguna — A landslide hit the Kaybiang Tunnel Road in Cavite’s upland town of Maragondon around 4 a.m. Tuesday, rendering the tunnel impassable to motorists.
However, no casualty or damage has been reported, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Regional Director Olivia Luces, who also chairs Calabarzon’s Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC), told the Philippine News Agency (PNA).
Luces said the Calabarzon OCD-RDRRMC operations center has raised its Blue Alert status as of 5 p.m. Monday as the provincial DRRM offices of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon were on heightened alert due to the effects of the southwest monsoon enhanced by Tropical Depression Henry.
She said Cavite, Laguna, and Batangas are experiencing light to moderate with occasional heavy rains; while Rizal and Quezon are having light to heavy rains.
Meanwhile, several schools in the region have announced the suspension of classes on Tuesday.
In Batangas and Cavite, classes in all levels in public and private schools were suspended. In Rizal, Antipolo City and the towns of San Mateo, Morong, and Cainta also suspended classes in all levels in both public and private schools while Tanay suspended afternoon classes in all levels.
In Laguna, San Pedro City classes in all levels in public and private schools had also been suspended as announced by Mayor Lourdes Cataquiz early Tuesday. The towns of Pangil and Magdalena suspended classes in all public and private schools while Majayjay, Pila and Victoria cancelled classes in pre-school to high school.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard-Southern Tagalog and Philippine Ports Authority-Batangas reported that as of 7 a.m., the ports were operating normally but added that they are monitoring the situation.
The state weather bureau, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, has warned against sea travel over the western seaboard of Southern Luzon as coastal waters are rough to very rough. ( Saul Pa-a/PNA)
