LEGAZPI CITY — Almost 200 high school students here enjoyed watching films at a mall for free while learning how to care for the environment as part of the Green Film Festival on Tuesday.

The SM Legazpi City opened one of its theaters to at least 170 students from Legazpi Science High School for the endeavor — a joint initiative of the newly-opened mall with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Bicol that aims to educate, raise awareness on and promote environmental sustainability to the youth in the region.

“It is our way of helping the government in engaging the youth to protect the environment. Through these films, they will be inspired to do something good for the environment. We hope they will share the lessons they learned from the films and influence others to protect our natural wealth,” Claire Hariri, SM spokesperson, said in an interview.

Shown to the students during the Green Film Festival were documentaries and other videos promoting environmental responsibilities, solid waste management and stories about various protected areas in the country.

“These materials showcase the beauty and values in preserving our environment and natural resources,” Hariri said.

The DENR-Environmental Management Bureau, together with SM Legazpi, held the Green Film Festival in compliance with Republic Act 9512 or the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act. (Connie Calipay/PNA)
