LPA unlikely to turn into typhoon: PAGASA

MANILA — The chance for a low-pressure area (LPA) outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) to become a tropical depression in the next 24 hours is still low, the weather bureau said Monday.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist Ariel Rojas said the LPA was last spotted 2,840 kilometers east southeast of Mindanao.

“It’s chance to become a tropical depression in the next 24 hours is still low,” he said.

While the LPA is still in the middle of the sea, he said “it still has the time to accumulate moisture, which could trigger it to develop into a tropical depression.”

Once the LPA develops into a tropical depression and enters PAR, Rojas said it will be named “Amang.”

The LPA might enter PAR either by Friday or Saturday, according to Roxas.

Meanwhile, some parts of Luzon and Visayas will experience light rains likely until Tuesday due to the northeast monsoon affecting these islands.

Cagayan Valley, meanwhile, will have cloudy skies with light rains, while the rest of Luzon and Visayas will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains.

Localized thunderstorms, on the other hand, will cause partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers over Mindanao.

Moderate to strong winds will blow over the northern and eastern sections of the country. Coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate with slight to moderate seas, PAGASA said.
