The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said Tuesday, Aug. 22, that it is studying the petition of transport groups for a P2 fare hike.

Multiple groups filed the petition amid the rising fuel prices.

LTFRB Chairperson Teofilo Guadiz III assured the drivers’ plights are not “falling on deaf ears.”

“We are well aware and continue to hear their plight amid the continuing oil price hikes and their difficulty in earning enough for their families,” Guadiz said.

However, the LTFRB said the petition for higher base fare is still subject to further review.

Guadiz said the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) will also look into the proposal.

“Every fare increase has an economic impact and that is what has to be studied carefully by other government agencies such as the NEDA in order to come up with a fare increase that is justifiable and will not create a huge economic burden,” he added.

Once approved, the minimum fare will increase from P12 to P14.
