IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has deputized over a hundred policemen to assist them in the enforcement of traffic laws in this province.

The 116 policemen from this province’s 16 towns underwent the deputation and orientation seminar on transport and traffic laws on Wednesday.

Gov. Wilter Yap Palma said he requested LTO to deputize the policemen due to an “alarming” rise in traffic accidents in the province, which he attributed to the lack of enforcers, rampant traffic law violations, and the lack of road courtesy.

“The hands of the policemen are tied because they are not authorized or deputized to enforce land transportation laws,” Palma said on Thursday.

Palma noted that data compiled by the provincial police office showed that 394 traffic accidents have been registered from January up to September.

This is higher by 25.5 percent compared to the 314 accidents recorded during the same period last year.

Wednesday’s deputation and orientation seminar included a problem-solving approach on violations of traffic laws. (Dennis Baguio/PNA)
