Luzon grid on ‘yellow alert’ for 2 hours as power plants trip

MANILA — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) put the whole Luzon grid under “yellow alert” for two hours from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, but lifted it at exactly 3:08 p.m., as the agency noted a “low system demand” afterward.

A yellow alert is a condition that could plunge the grid into brownouts if the system would not be very quick on its response, the Department of Energy (DOE) said.

The NGCP announced its issuance of the yellow alert in Luzon on twitter because of “the unexpected shutdown and limited generation of some power plants”.

It said the available power generation capacity of power plants in Luzon then was 10,740 MW, while peak demand was 9,654 MW.

Data from the DOE on Thursday afternoon cited major plants that had unplanned or forced outages were Makban U5, Southwest Luzon Power Generation Corp. (SLPGC) Unit 1 (U1), SLPGC U2, San Gabriel, Malaya U2, Iliana Block A, and MakBan U2.

In its Twitter account, the NGCP said the yellow alert for the Luzon grid was lifted “due to low system demand”. (Ma. Cristina Arayata/PNA)
