Magnitude 5.1 quake rocks Surigao del Sur anew

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Surigao del Sur on Monday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

State seismologists reported that the tremor hit 140 kilometers (km) northeast of Hinatuan  around 3:37 p.m.

The tectonic quake had a depth of focus of 13 km. 

Based on the earthquake information bulletin updated by Phivolcs at 2:38 p.m. of Jan. 30, the undersea quake was an aftershock of the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the province last Dec. 2, 2023.

The tremor also happened almost two weeks after a similar magnitude 5.7 aftershock hit the same area earlier this month.

No infrastructure damage and aftershocks were expected according to Phivolcs. – avds
