Magnitude 5.3 aftershock hits Occidental Mindoro

MANILA – A magnitude 5.3 tectonic earthquake jolted Occidental Mindoro at about 8:09 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quake is an aftershock of the magnitude 6.4 quake that shook the province on Mar. 14.

The aftershock struck 82 km. northwest of the municipality of Lubang, while the epicenter of Monday’s earthquake was traced 110 km. northwest of the same municipality.

Phivolcs has recorded 671 aftershocks as of 7:00 a.m. Wednesday.

At least 224 of these were plotted or located and one was felt.

The magnitudes of the 671 aftershocks ranged from 1.3 to 5.1, according to Phivolcs.

Earlier, Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum Jr. said the magnitude 6.4 quake, which was 28 km. deep was generated by the movement along the Manila Trench.

Phivolcs has not recorded any reported intensities or instrumental intensities for Wednesday’s aftershock. (PNA) – bny
