Magnitude 6.8 quake jolts Sarangani

A magnitude 6.8 quake struck Sarangani in Davao Occidental at 4:14 p.m. this Friday, Nov. 17, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The 72-kilometer deep quake is tectonic in origin.

Damages and aftershocks are expected.

The Phivolcs said there is no tsunami threat following the quake.

Intensities I to VI were felt in the following areas:

Intensity VI – Kiamba, Sarangani; Polomolok, South Cotabato; General Santos City

Intensity V – Pantukan, Davao de Oro; Tagum City, Davao del Norte; Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental; Alabel, Maasim, and Malungon in Sarangani; Banga, Lake Sebu, Tampakan, and Tupi in South Cotabato; Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat.

Intensity IV – Zamboanga City; Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Davao City; Banisilan, Kabacan, Kidapawan City in Cotabato; Malapatan, Sarangani; Koronadal City, Norala, and Santo Niño in South Cotabato; Bagumbayan, Kalamansig, Lebak, Lutayan, President Quirino, and Senator Ninoy Aquino in Sultan Kudarat; Bislig City and Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur; Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao; Cotabato City

Intensity III – Kalilangan, Bukidnon; Laak and Nabunturan in Davao de Oro; Aleosan, Antipas, M’lang, Magpet, and Pigkawayan in Cotabato; Isabela City, Basilan; Jolo, Sulu

Intensity II – Don Carlos and San Fernando in Bukidnon; Maco and New Bataan in Davao de Oro; Carmen, Cotabato

Intensity I – Cabanglasan, Dangcagan, Libona, Malitbog, Manolo Fortich, Maramag, Talakag, Valencia City in BUkidnon; Mambajao, Camiguin; Balingasag, and Villanueva in Misamis Oriental

The Phivolcs has downgraded the initially reported magnitude 7.2 to 6.8.
