Magnolia beats Ginebra in ‘Clasico’ QF rubber match

MANILA — The Magnolia Hotshots took the last seat in the Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup semifinals after eliminating Barangay Ginebra, 85-72, in the final game of the quarterfinal round at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on Wednesday night.

The Hotshots pulled away from the third quarter, outscoring the Barangay, 28-13, to eventually take a 20-point lead, 70-50, before holding them off in the end.

Paul Lee erupted for 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal for Magnolia, which will face Rain Or Shine in the next round back at the same venue starting Friday.

Mark Barroca added 13 points, three rebounds, and one assist.

Jeff Chan scored 17 points, all in the fourth quarter when Ginebra tried to mount a comeback from 22 points down, six rebounds, one assist, and one steal for Ginebra, which was sent packing despite finishing third in the team standings after the eliminations.
