Malabon prepares for rainy season, gets automatic trash rake

The city of Malabon is prepared for the rainy season with its continuous declogging operations supported by its new automatic trash rake to clean drainages and prevent further flooding.

Roderick Tongol, chief of Malabon Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, said the city’s preparations include engineering measures and community participation.

“Sa engineering side, patuloy ‘yung mga declogging operation namin, tsaka ‘yung paglilinis ng mga estero,” he said.

“Tapos sa paghahanda naman sa community, ‘yung mga barangay namin ay sinanay namin sa mga protocol kung ano ‘yung dapat na gawin kapag may mga alert level na ipinaparating ang PAGASA,” he added.

The city’s automatic trash rake was turned over by the Department of Science and Technology on Friday, May 27, and will be used in cleaning Letre creek along P. Aquino Avenue in Brgy. Tonsuya.

Several personnel were assigned to operate the machine for no less than two hours, especially during the rainy season.

The project aims to remove debris, dried leaves, and other solid wastes in the Malabon-Tullahan River System. Trash traps were also placed in the city to filter wastes.

“Sa pamamagitan ng automatic trash rake ay maiiwasan ‘yung pagbara ng mga basura sa mga kanal at sa tributaries dito, so ‘pag nakukuha na ‘yung basura sa trash rake,” Community Environment and Natural resources Office chief Mark Mesina said.

Mesina said authorities continue to coordinate with barangays to prevent the dumping of solid wastes into the river. – Report from Rod Lgusad/AG– gb
