Rapid technological advancements, especially in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), have served as the breeding ground for new threats that continue to collide with the constant battle against disinformation.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has noted the possible repercussions of AI when it is misused and falls into the wrong hands, mandating the development of a national framework to ensure the ethical and responsible use of machine-learning technology in the domestic cyberspace.

At the Palace press briefing on Tuesday, June 24, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro cited the President’s directive to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to lead the ongoing research, international benchmarking, and creation of regular policy recommendations to guide AI deployment in the country.

The Palace press briefer cited the timeliness of working on policies geared towards regulating the usage of AI as part of the preparations for President Marcos’ upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA) in July.

Likewise, she also called on media professionals to be one with the government in the fight against fake news and disinformation to protect the welfare of Filipinos and preserve the integrity of media institutions.
