President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Manila’s chief prosecutor Rey Bulay as the new commissioner of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), Malacañang announced Thursday.

“We confirm that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte signed the nomination of Atty. Rey E. Bulay as Commissioner of the Commission on Elections,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a press statement.

Roque said Bulay will serve as a Comelec commissioner until Feb. 2, 2027.

He said the Palace wishes Bulay “all the best in his new assignment.”

“We are confident that Atty. Bulay will ensure the conduct of honest, orderly, credible and peaceful elections,” Roque said.

Palace has yet to release Bulay’s appointment paper.

Bulay is a graduate of San Beda College of Law.

He was also appointed in November 2016 as commissioner of the Presidential Commission on Good Government.

He likewise served as Muntinlupa City councilor from 1988 to 1998 and from 2007 to 2010.

Bulay also became president of the Councilors League of the Philippines. (PNA)-rir
