Marawi rehabilitation now 65% complete, free housing awaits more IDPs

More internally displaced individuals affected by the Marawi siege four years ago will soon be provided free housing.

The Task Force Bangon Marawi said the rehabilitation of the area is on track with a current completion rate of 65%, while all the remaining projects will be finished by December this year. This was given assurance by Malacañang.

“Ang pangako po ng Presidente ay babangon muli po ang Marawi at ang pangako po niya ay sa kanyang termino,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in his latest briefing.

Among the permanent housing sites for IDPs is the Pamayandig Ranao Residences in Gadungan, Marawi City. More than 2,000 IDPs are qualified for the free housing, with those whose former residences were near Lanao Lake are prioritized.

Some IDPs are still staying in temporary shelters such as Bahay Pag-asa in Mipaga. Some of them are hoping to be allowed to return to their homes on ground zero.

However, some of them do not yet know where to extract funds for the rebuilding of their homes.

This is why Task Force Bangon Marawi is pushing for the enactment of the Marawi Compensation Bill.

“We are dependent on the approval of the compensation bill pending before Congress,” Marawi City Mayor Majul Usman Gandamra said.

“The national government has no money to provide, unless the compensation bill is approved by Congress and finally approved by the President,” Task Force Bangon Marawi Chairperson Eduardo del Rosario said.  – Report from Patrick de Jesus/AG-rir
