President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday, Nov. 10, said his administration is aiming to build more houses for Filipinos.

The President said the country is in need of roughly six million housing units.

Marcos added that the establishment of one million housing units per year is their goal and they will work ‘very hard’ to achieve it.

“And that is why we have taken on a very aggressive housing program,” Marcos said during a roundtable meeting with Cambodian business leaders.

“So we are aiming for one million home, one million low-cost and socialized homes a year. It is an ambitious number, but we will try very, very hard,” he added.

The President stressed that it is not just simply building houses, but to ‘build a community’.

“Otherwise, it is not practical for people to live there. So there has to be schools nearby, work cannot be farther, commute cannot be more than one hour, there has to be a marketplace, all of this. The transportation is easy to get to,” he continued.

The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) launched the Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino program in September which aims to build one million housing units annually which will make a total of six million at the end of the term of President Marcos.

Marcos is also se to sign an executive order for the implementation of Section 24 of the Republic Act No. 11201 that mandates various government agencies to jointly identify idle state lands suitable for housing and rural development.
