Meralco apologizes for questionable billing

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has apologized for the burden it brought upon consumers amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Meralco has stated that there was a confusion due to the mixed actual reading and estimate reading resulting to the increased rate of the bills. This was questioned by the senators since there is no written basis on how the electric company computed the estimated reading.

According to Meralco, the months of March, April and May are covered in the bills with high rates. Customer may pay only ¼ of the amount and the remaining balance could be paid through installment.

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) stated that Meralco has violated its advisory where a detailed plan was given on how to implement the billing. Around 47,000 complaints have been filed with ERC against Meralco. – PTV News
