MinDA promotes use of ‘blue energy’ as an alternative source of power supply in Mindanao

An official from the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) said Wednesday, Sept. 14, that they are looking at the possibility of using “blue energy: as an alternative source of power supply in Mindanao.

In the Laging Handa briefing, MinDA Secretary Maria Belen Acosta said that they already met with the officials from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to properly outline their projects in the region.

Acosta said they recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Singaporean company Oceanpixel and Altum Green Energy Operations to “promote and accelerate the blue economy and energy.”

She added that the initiative will be a “great help” in reaching communities that do not have enough power supply.

“Itong blue energy or blue economy, hangga’t may dagat, hangga’t may low tide at high tide, makakapag-supply ito ng energy,” Acosta said.

“Meron tayong turbines na ilalagay sa ilalim ng dagat at kada ikot nito makakaproduce siya ng equivalent energy,” she added.

Acosta added that through the blue economy, they will be able to reach geographically isolated municipalities, depressed areas, and those areas where energy grids are unavailable.

“Sa paraan na ito, magiging independent ‘yung mga geographically isolated na municipalities kasi meron na silang source of energy.” – gb
