Minor charged for killing Albay lady teacher

LEGAZPI CITY — Police on Thursday filed murder and frustrated murder charges against the suspected killer of a public school teacher of the Oringon Elementary School in Barangay Oringon in Pioduran, Albay.

Teacher Maylene Durante was stabbed dead shortly before midnight Tuesday. Her two companions, both Grade 6 pupils, were also wounded and are now being treated at the Pioduran Memorial District Hospital. The teacher’s cadaver was found sprawled acfew meters away from the Principal’s Office, a room used by the victims as sleeping quarters.

Police Senior Officer 1 Jigger Bas, the town police investigator, said that inquest proceedings were submitted on Thursday to the Provincial Prosecutors Office in Ligao City, a day after police nabbed the suspect in the vicinity of the crime scene.

Bas said they have found strong probable cause to file murder and two counts of frustrated murder against the 17-year-old minor, who was tagged by two child witnesses as responsible for the killing of the 23-year-old teacher.

The victim was allowed by the school administration to use the office as her quarters to help her save money since she was a resident of Polangui town, which is around 44 kilometers away from Pioduran town, Jarabejo said.

Barangay Oringon is a remote upland village of Pioduran, where the only mode of transportation is either by walking or the “habal-habal” motorcycle. (Mar Serrano/PNA)
