MMDA lifts number coding scheme for PUVs

MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has lifted the implementation of the number coding scheme for public utility vehicles (PUVs) on Tuesday.

The initiative was aimed at assisting commuters affected by the temporary closure of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) on Monday, but regular operations for LRT Lines 1 and 2, MRT-3 and the Philippine National Railways resumed Tuesday after the inspection of its structures and tracks were completed following the quake.

“We will still continue with our traffic management plan, the number coding scheme for PUVs is suspended but our focus now is more on disaster response,” said MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago in a text message to reporters.

A 10-man team from MMDA’s Public Safety Division was deployed to help in the search and rescue operations in Porac, Pampanga, where scores were reportedly trapped in a supermarket that collapsed.

MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim, who also serves as chairperson of the Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, instructed all city disaster risk reduction and management officers in Metro Manila to submit an initial report on inspections within their areas of responsibility not later than 5 p.m. Tuesday.

“All reports from the cities will be consolidated for our metro-wide assessment. DPWH-NCR has submitted their assessment on the situation of bridges in Metro Manila,” Pialago said.

The MMDA’s Metro Manila Crisis Monitoring and Management Center is on standby and monitoring the latest developments on the Luzon quake.
